Issue: Late October 2007

Providence Show Opens This Friday!

Late Breaking News: Don’t Miss Any of These Exciting Features

Live Chair Building Demonstration
Kentucky based furniture maker Brian Boggs will build a three-slat ladder-back side chair, in cherry wood throughout the weekend. Hand tools such as drawknives and spokeshaves will be used to bring all the pieces to their final shape. Then the precise and fascinating process of drilling the holes for the rung mortices will commence. Chair assembly and the pining of the slats and weaving of the hickory bark seat will complete the project.

Win a Chair & Benefit a Good Cause
Show attendees will have a chance to win a similar white oak ladder back side chair handcrafted by Boggs valued at $1080. Raffle tickets will be sold for $5 each to raise funds for GreenWood programs that teach forest management and appropriate technology woodworking to underprivileged artisans in Honduras and Peru. Dedicated GreenWood craftsmen have taught more than 100 rural artisans in Honduras how to make chairs, bowls, pens, boats, and sustainably managed mahogany guitar neck blanks for market. They plan to expand to deliver GreenWood training to poor forest communities in Peru and elsewhere in South and Central America. These efforts represent how American craftsmen are helping woodworkers in other parts of world, often places where the wood for many of the items in the show originates.

NEW:
Fine Craft Added
One of the most exciting additions is the entirely new fine craft segment of the show. Dozens of artisans from across North America will present fine handcrafted jewelry, wearables, glass, ceramics, and much more.

Showcase Rooms

Craft Book Debut
An exciting new book, THE ARTFUL HOME: Using Art & Craft to Create Living Spaces, will be making its New England debut and the book’s author Toni Sikes, will conduct a personal book signing session on Saturday at 1 pm.

Best in Show Awards
Best in Show exhibitor awards will be presented Friday afternoon to those judged as producing the best furniture, accessories, original art, and fine craft.

Work by students from the Rhode Island School of Design will be exhibited at the show as well as that produced by students and faculty from the North Bennet Street School and the Connecticut Valley School of Woodworking.
