Fine Furnishings Featured Faces
Every year commendable exhibitors are chosen to be the faces of the Fine Furnishings Shows on various marketing materials both printed and electronic. This year the following artisans were selected. They appear from left to right in the photos above.
Brian Boggs of Berea, Kentucky makes beautiful handmade chairs that are not only a work of art; they're comfortable and built to last a lifetime. He designs and builds each chair by hand, using a process of steaming and bending each part of the back, legs and arms to a graceful and extremely comfortable curve. One of his chairs was voted “Best in Show” at last year’s Fine Furnishings Milwaukee Show.
Jim Newcomb builds contemporary artful furniture that has unique character. The colors used to decorate the pieces are the natural colors of the woods. All materials used are of the finest quality. Each piece is made upon order and is hand crafted and finished.
The intricately painted and gilded wood bowls that Shaari Horowitz crafts in Sharon, Connecticut began as a balance to her work in the mural painting tradition, as they allowed her the pleasure of working on a more intimate scale. Each piece is carved or turned from one solid piece of wood. After careful preparation, she hand-paints finely detailed, original designs using an earth-bound palette.
Bloomington, Indiana based Nathan Hunter is an independent, fine furniture maker who combines contemporary organic and architectural style with traditional craftsmanship to produce functional art furnishings. He adheres to the highest standards of execution and regard for detail in the design and completion of each piece.
Furniture maker Thomas J. MacDonald is a self-proclaimed "maker of future family heirlooms." He has mastered creating the fine designs of 18th century furniture makers like Duncan Phyfe and Thomas Chippendale. The pieces he displayed at Providence last year were real show-stoppers. He won the “Best in Show – Traditional” award hands-down.
Award Winning Exhibitors
Gary David recently won first place in Custom Woodworking Business magazine’s 2007 Design Portfolio competition. His residential bars, which make up 50% of his business, feature graceful curves, natural edges, and are made of timer he has personally harvested, sawn and dried from his own 20-acre wood lot. This recognition also earned him a beautiful 2-page article in Custom Woodworking Business magazine.
Thomas Skaggs of Whitehaven Woodworks won a prestigious 2007 NICHE Award in the Turned Wood Division. Thomas is primarily a furniture maker but he likes to incorporate turned pieces into his work as he did on his prize winner titled Prairie River
