Bas-relief Ceramic Art Tile

Each of my tile designs is origanally carved in modeling clay, then cast in plaster to form a mold. Soft clay is then pressed into the mold by hand to produce the tiles. After slow drying they are fired to a low temperature of 1840 fahrenheit , called the bisque fire. The glaze colors are then carefully applied by brush as the tiles are prepared for the high fire of 2180 degrees fahrenheit. I make my frames using various hardwoods to compliment the glaze colores.

My work and my life have been influenced by the late 19th- early 20th century Arts and Crafts Movement which advocated the search for a way of life that is simple , contemplative and true. Thus my inspiration is drawn from the pure beauty I see around me. That could be a grand vista enjoyed on vacation or could come just as easily from a visit to a friend or a simple trip to the back yard.
